Integrating Evidence-based Practices for Literacy and Mental Health Promotion in Early Childhood

This talk presents work conducted by Dr. Chou in partnership with agencies in Liberty City, a predominantly Black neighborhood in Miami, FL impacted by high rates of poverty and gun violence. Content will focus on the formation of a reciprocal collaboration with community partners, design of a children's book and dialogic reading protocol aiming to advance affective knowledge among preschool- and Kindergarten-age children, and evaluation in the context of local challenges.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Advance their understanding of wise interventions and their potential application to primary care.
- Discuss caregiver strategies to promote emotional knowledge and literacy in young children.
- Describe dialogic reading strategies to enhance learning in caregiver-child book reading.
