Historians and anthropologists have debated the invention of the wheel for centuries, yet there remains no scholarly consensus on where, how and by whom the wheel was originally invented. Using state-of-the-art computational methods from structural mechanics and engineering design, along with some novel mathematical formulations created specifically for this study, we present a new theory for how the wheel was invented, gaining new insight into an unresolved question.
