Susy Frankel FRSNZ is Professor of Law and Chair in Intellectual Property and International Trade at the Law Faculty, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Susy is an international authority on international intellectual property law and the relationship between indigenous peoples’ knowledge (especially mātauranga Māori) and intellectual property.
She has published over 20 authored books and edited collections, and numerous articles and book chapters across all areas of intellectual property (patents, trade mark and copyright), including the frequently cited treatise Intellectual Property in New Zealand (Lexis Nexis 2011) and Test Tubes for Global Intellectual Property Issues: Small Market Economies (Cambridge University Press 2015).
Prof. Frankel is the Deputy Chair of the Academy Executive Committee of the Royal Society, Te Apārangi and a member of the Society’s Council. In 2020 she was appointed a member of the Waitangi Tribunal. She served as Chair of the Copyright Tribunal, 2008-2020; was President (2015–2017) of the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research of Intellectual Property (ATRIP); and a Founding Director of the New Zealand Centre of International Economic Law. Before joining Victoria University of Wellington, in 1997, Susy practiced law in New Zealand and London and she is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a Solicitor of England & Wales.
