OncoEng Metamaterial and Additive Manufacturing Workshop

OncoEng Metamaterial and Additive Manufacturing Workshop

OncoEng, Imperial College London

Course on the Optimisation of Structural Metamaterials and Additive Manufacturing as part of the EPSRC OncoEng Programme Grant. The workshop comprises of three day's which are broadly aligned to the following subject areas.

Day 1: General introduction to the UK EPSRC Programme Grant OncoEng, Imperial Department of Aeronautics and a general introduction to design optimisation with a focus on topology optimisation.

Day 2: Multiscale design optimisation. This day will focus on how we design multiscale structures (also known as metamaterials). It uses gradient based approaches, sharing much with classical topology optimisation methodologies. It allows us to produce complex behaviour both at the scale of the unit lattice geometry and also at the large scale - resulting in complex emerging behaviour which differs significantly from that of a simple small scale geometry. This day will cover the multiscale coupling of scales, how we model the small-scale geometry and how it can be optimised, and then how we couple everything together so we can obtain graded multiscale structures. We will consider, linear structures, vibration control and large deformations coupled across the scales.

Day 3: The final day of the workshop will focus on the printing technologies to be developed in the programme grant, especially those with small print details.

Practicalities: The workshop will be run in a hybrid format. However there will be some activities, such as lab visits, which will not be available on the online format. If you are attending in-person please register for each of the three days. If you are attending online, please register for whichever (or all) the days you will attend.
